For the First Time, Rural Karnataka Schools Explore the Night Sky

Thousands of students in Karnataka, many from rural and tribal schools, are now seeing planets and stars up close for the very first time. With high-end telescopes reaching 826 KRIES schools, science is no longer just something they read about… It’s something they can experience with wonder.

How this journey began

In 2017, The Digital Mobile Planetarium, an initiative by KSTePS and Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri Siddaramaiah, brought the stars to government schools across Karnataka, sparking curiosity in young minds and reaching over 25 lakh students.

Following the success of this project, another pioneering initiative was launched by Hon’ble Science Minister Shri N. S. Boseraju and KSTePS, establishing high-end observatories in Karnataka Residential Schools to enhance science learning further.

Key Highlights of the Initiative

The installation of high-end telescopes within school campuses eliminates the need for students to travel to urban centers or specialized facilities, thereby bringing astronomy learning directly to their environment.

This initiative provides students in remote and underserved regions with their first direct exposure to celestial observation, broadening their academic horizons and inspiring aspirations beyond conventional boundaries.

The successful implementation of this program is the result of a strategic collaboration between the Karnataka Science and Technology Promotion Society (KSTePS) and the Hon’ble Minister for Science and Technology, Shri N.S. Boseraju, whose shared vision has made this initiative possible.

Teachers are provided with specialized training to operate the telescopes and conduct astronomy sessions, ensuring that the equipment is effectively utilized to foster scientific curiosity and conceptual understanding among students.
